Approximately 25,000 homes in south-east Queensland found themselves experiencing outages on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms passed over the area, producing wind gusts topping 109 kilometers per hour.

Large Ice Stones and Widespread Destruction

Residents witnessed large ice chunks reaching sizes of seven centimeters in some areas. Meteorological experts announced that various areas across the state had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Emergency crews were focused on reestablishing power throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews deployed to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Weather Woes

Simultaneously, around one thousand households in Victoria also encountered electricity disruptions after the capital city recorded its wettest day in 18 months.

Rescue organizations handled 598 calls for help across the state, mostly for property damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

Hardest Hit Areas

• Werribee region - experienced considerable destruction
• Hoppers Crossing - multiple assistance requests
• Wyndham region - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on Sunday, in excess of 28,000 energy customers in the state were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were forecast to persist along large portions of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to draw in moisture against the shoreline.

Tuesday was expected to become the heaviest precipitation period, with continued severe weather risk expected across different parts of both regions.

Medical Alert

Health officials cautioned that there was an greater possibility of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the state's northern country region, especially given the current weather patterns.

This caution comes after past events where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the area.
